The story of Ahold Coffee Company begins in 1887, when Albert Heijn takes over the family grocery in Oostzaan from his father Jan Heijn. A few years later in 1895, in the laundry room behind the shop, he begins roasting coffee.

With supply and accessibility in mind, at the end of the 19th century Albert Heijn moves to Zaandam. In 1911, on the Oostzijde (East Bank) in Zaandam, his first coffee factory opens. Here the green coffee beans arrive up the River Zaan by ship in burlap bags. With skilled craftsmen and professional equipment, Albert Heijn sees no reason why he can’t make the very best products 'in-house'.

‘Boffie’

In the thirties, the company Albert Heijn launches its ‘Boffie’ adverts. Using the slogan "Wait! Here comes Boffie with Albert Heijn Coffee", the campaign proves a huge success. Boffie is also used for various other marketing activities.

Smart Alternative

World War II creates a temporary problem, as raw materials are scarce. In the absence of coffee, production is forced to fall back on a substitute: chicory. This wartime coffee is known as ‘Smalsko’, an abbreviation in Dutch for “tastes like coffee”.

In 1977, the Albert Heijn production company gets its own name: Marvelo. It is a new direction, focusing on a limited number of strong product groups. Products that are no longer profitable, or that it would no longer pay to invest in, are outsourced.

Our factory

In June 1991, the decision is made to build a brand new factory. The first spade cut is made on 29 November and the move begins on 8 March 1993, taking sixteen weeks. The new factory is designed so that huge production is possible on the one hand while on the other the space can be used flexibly to respond to demand for new products or packaging.

Renewal is vital, and in this spirit the dawn of the new millennium sees the introduction of a new name: Ahold Coffee Company. It also calls for investment to be able to respond effectively to demand for new products or packaging. So, for example, in record time we developed our own brand of coffee pods, which is the main reason why today Ahold Coffee Company is one of the largest coffee pod producers.

But our growth isn’t limited to product innovation. By teaming up with leading retailers and wholesalers, Ahold Coffee Company continues to expand its sales across Europe.
